Erica Papillion-Posey assumes the role of Clara (Summertime) in The Aurora Fox Theater production of Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess"
By George Gershwin, DuBose & Dorothy Heyward & Ira Gershwin
Book adapted by Suzan-Lori Parks
Musical Score Adapted by Dierdre L. Murray
Heywards’ play “Porgy and Bess” follows the lives of the inhabitants of Catfish Row, an African-American section of Charleston, South Carolina. The musical follows the crippled Porgy and his beloved Bess, who is under the thrall of the dangerous Crown and the sinewy drug dealer Sportin’ Life.
Set in the 1930s, Porgy and Bess centers on the tragic love story of the crippled beggar Porgy and beautiful Bess, who longs to turn away from her former life as a prostitute and drug addict. After a murder, Bess’s abusive partner Crown flees, leaving her at the mercy of a disapproving community and tempted by the seductive Sportin’ Life. Bess strikes up an unlikely relationship with Porgy and gradually finds acceptance on Catfish Row—until a hurricane and the return of Crown change everyone’s lives forever.
Porgy and Bess has evolved from its arguably racist stereotypes of 1930s Broadway. This version of the book is adapted by Suzan-Lori Parks. Summertime, It Ain’t Necessarily So, and Porgy’s celebration of love and life I Got Plenty of Nuttin’ will stir the soul. Characters from the distant past will take you on a walk around a block that might exist today.
